Research & Survey Report

Research on Challenges

An estimated 6.1 million children out of school in 2014 reduced from 13.46 million in 2006. Out of 100 students, 29 per cent of girls and boys drop out of school before completing the full cycle of elementary education, and often they are the most marginalized children. (Source: SRI-IMRB Surveys, 2009 and 2014)
Around 50 per cent of adolescents do not complete secondary education, while approximately 20 million children not attending pre-school. (Source Rapid Survey of Children 2013-2014 MWCD)
Half of primary school-going children – which constitutes nearly 50 million children – not achieving grade appropriate learning levels. (Source: National Achievement Survey, NCERT 2017)

The Solution

The COVID-19 pandemic has severely impacted primary-level underprivileged and dropout children in India, specifically primary level children with nearly 50% of students in underprivileged households not studying during school closures. To address this issue, several solutions have been recommended

  • Digital Access:Providing affordable digital devices and internet access can help bridge the gap for underprivileged children. Currently, only 1 in 4 children in India have access to a digital device.
  • Mental Health Support:The pandemic has taken a toll on children's mental health, with 14% of 15- to 24-year-olds in India reporting feelings of depression or little interest in activities. Access to mental health services and promoting a supportive environment can help alleviate these issues.
  • Community-based Overall Development/Growth Initiatives for Kids: Local communities and Social organizations can provide essential support to underprivileged children for Foundational Literacy & life skills learning . For example, some teachers have taken initiatives to teach students in small groups or lend them phones for online study.
  • Government/Institutional Support:The government can play a crucial role in addressing the crisis by allocating resources to education and mental health initiatives. UNICEF India has been working closely with the government to support services reaching children, including reopening nutrition rehabilitation centers and training staff on infection prevention and control.

Additionally, UNICEF's report "The State of the World's Children 2021" highlights the importance of promoting, protecting, and caring for children's mental health. The report emphasizes the need for inclusion of understanding mental health in the curriculum of teachers and encourages parents, families, and communities to listen to children and support them to talk about mental health issues.
